SHERRI MCMULLEN ON RESPONSIBILITY & SUPPORT

© ANTHONY ROGERS

“Equity means POC owning our own businesses, making decisions and thus creating opportunities for people who look like us. It’s about creating a pathway for people who have been marginalized and haven’t been given the tools to navigate through this industry. As a black business owner, I have a responsibility to make sure that young black women come in my store and know that they have a place in this industry. For too long, this industry has felt exclusive, especially in the luxury space. Quite simply, we must take action by supporting black businesses and creatives while giving each other platforms to shine. We need to consistently mentor young talent and ensure they are well equipped to maneuver through this industry with longevity. We have to support brands and businesses that align with our values, and settle for nothing less. We have to reevaluate and learn from those around us that have different experiences and different backgrounds. We have to put people of color in positions of power for every brand and in every showroom.”
